Disney Promises Marvel Will Keep Making R-Rated ‘Deadpool’ Movies
There may be a few more F-bombs dropped around the Magic Kingdom.

The Walt Disney Company has enjoyed a squeaky clean image as the preeminent provider of family-friendly entertainment. However, things may get a little less wholesome with the upcoming acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox’s film and television assets, a $71.3 billion purchase that will bring darker brands such as FX and Fox Searchlight into the Disney fold. It also means that Fox, which has reaped big profits making R-rated Marvel superhero films such as “Deadpool” and “Logan,” will now be reunited with the Avengers, a team of heroes that never breaches the PG-13 parameters while saving the world.

On a call with investors, Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said that Disney will continue to make R-rated Deadpool movies and other adult-oriented Marvel adventures after it absorbs much of Fox.

“We will continue in that business,” promised Iger,

Billy Eichner to Write and Star in Universal Romantic Comedy from Producer Judd Apatow
It's not every day that I get to write about movie news that genuinely excites me, but fortunately, today is one of those days, as Billy Eichner has signed on to write and star in an untitled romantic comedy from power-producer Judd Apatow and director Nick Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall). See, I'm a big Eichner fan from way back, and I believe there are few comic performers more deserving of headlining their own movie, let alone one as fairly groundbreaking as this one. In what way, you ask? Well, according to Deadline, Eichner's film will follow …

‘Lego Movie 2’ Ready to Rebuild Box Office After Slow 2019 Start

  • The Wrap
After a slow opening month to 2019, business is about to pick up as four wide releases hit the box office this weekend. The biggest of the bunch is Warner Bros.’ “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” the first direct sequel to the 2014 stop-motion animated hit that launched a series of spinoffs in the intervening years.

Independent trackers are projecting an opening of $45-52 million this weekend from 4,276 screens, but analysts and rival distribution chiefs who spoke with TheWrap say that “Lego Movie 2” has a much higher ceiling. Rivals expect the film to earn a $55-60 million start, closer to the $69 million made by the first “Lego Movie.” WB is projecting an opening in the low $50 million range. Regardless of the figure, “Lego Movie 2” will post an opening higher than any release last month, including “Glass,” which opened to $40.2 million

“This is the first big, four-quadrant release of the year,

‘Maiden’ Follows Tracy Edwards’ ‘First Real Taste of Sexism and Misogyny’ During Epic Sailing Race (Video)

  • The Wrap
Tracy Edwards experienced her “first real taste of sexism and misogyny” when she sailed around the world with an all-female crew from 1989 to 1990 — but almost 30 years later, “Maiden” director Alex Holmes doesn’t think much has changed.

At the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Edwards and Holmes were promoting “Maiden,” which chronicles Edwards’ race around the world with an all-female crew, although male crews dominated the sport. She explained that she was racing with a crew of 17 men and that in the entire race, out of 230 participants, only four were women. That’s when she decided to change it up and skipper the first all-female crew.

“This was my first real taste of sexism and misogyny and at the age of 21, I had no idea it existed,” Edwards told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven. “So I found myself fighting this battle I had no idea I was going to fight — putting the team together,

‘The Gospel of Eureka’ Film Review: Drag Queens and Christians Each Put on Their Own Show in Arkansas

  • The Wrap
Nestled in the heart of middle America is a town called Eureka Springs in Arkansas. You might not have ever heard of it, or maybe you passed by it on the way to someplace else. But that seems to be the point of the almost purposely hidden, quiet rural setting that operates on its own system of beliefs. Or so it appears in “The Gospel of Eureka,” a new documentary directed by Donal Mosher and Michael Palmieri that takes audiences to this small section of the country to examine its homegrown politics and allure.

Bordered by predominantly conservative states like Texas, Missouri, and Tennessee, it’s a wonder how Eureka Springs even came to be, with its popular drag bars, where performers sing gospel songs and patrons with crosses around their necks guzzle booze. It’s just another night in this sleepy Christian town that shatters deep-seated images of Bible

New ABC Boss Karey Burke: ‘I Would Be Thrilled’ to Add Another Late-Night Show After ‘Kimmel’

  • The Wrap
CBS has James Corden at 12:37 a.m., immediately following Stephen Colbert. NBC’s Seth Meyers starts two minutes earlier, just a commercial break after Jimmy Fallon calls it a night. ABC airs two 30-minute shows, news program “Nightline” and viral video show “Right This Minute,” across the same hour — is now the time for the Disney-owned broadcast net to add a second late-night comedy/variety show after “Jimmy Kimmel Live?”

We asked new ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke exactly that question today, roughly five hours or so after Jimmy Kimmel himself schlepped all the way out to Pasadena to introduce the former Freeform originals chief to the Television Critics Association during our winter press tour.

Kimmel did a masterful job roasting his new boss and longtime home network, and then Burke endeared herself to the reporters with her college graduation photo, a snapshot of “Bachelor” night at the Burke household,
